Library and Archive

The Dobell-Moseley Library and Archive holds the Museum’s collections of books, photographs and ephemera relating to the county of Torfaen. The library also holds back copies of the Pontypool Free Press. It is a veritable treasure trove for anyone researching the area.

Research Torfaen’s Past

Established in the 1980s with help from the Pontypool County School Old Girls Association, the Library and Archive was named to commemorate two leading figures in the history of the school. Today, it is carefully managed by our dedicated team of volunteer Librarians who work to catalogue, digitize and preserve these precious items. They also conduct research for the Museum and for the public.

If you require any help with a research project, family history or a general enquiry, please do get in touch using the form below.

Please note that we charge a small fee for research to be conducted:

  • £5 per research query
  • £1 for each image that you may like scanned or photocopied (copyright permitting)

These sums can be paid either by cheque made payable to the Torfaen Museum Trust or by card over the phone.
If you wish to visit the Library and Archive to make use of our Research Room then please give us a call to book a session.

Please note that we hold very little on individual people from Torfaen’s past. We are happy to try but for this sort of enquiry we advise that visitors approach the Gwent Archives.
